Our association is proud to announce a significant victory in the fight for intellectual property rights within the tattoo industry. Suzanne Quartel, a talented tattoo artist from Liège, Belgium, recently won a groundbreaking legal case against the unauthorized use of her tattoo designs. This marks the first victory of its kind in Belgium and sets an important precedent for protecting tattoo artists' creative work.
For years, Suzanne faced the challenge of seeing her original designs used without permission by others in the industry. Despite threats and obstacles, including physical intimidation, Suzanne stood her ground and fought with professionalism and resilience. Her courage is an inspiration to the tattooing community in Belgium and beyond.
Our association, ASBL Tatouage Belgique, fully supports Suzanne and other artists in their pursuit of justice. As tattooing continues to gain recognition as an art form and a legitimate profession, it is crucial that we defend the creative rights of those who adhere to the rules and work with integrity.
This victory is just the beginning. Additional legal actions are underway, targeting international corporations and individuals who exploit the works of professional tattoo artists. Beyond this, we have initiated formal petitions at both regional (Wallonia) and national levels, demanding professional recognition for tattoo artists and the publication of an official registry of licensed practitioners in Belgium.
We also call for stricter enforcement of regulations targeting illegal tattooing practices, as current inspections disproportionately impact those who operate legally. This creates unfair competition and undermines the integrity of the profession.
Message from the Association President, Bruno Antonio Menei:
“Our association does not aim to divide but to advance our profession. Tattooing deserves recognition as an art and a profession in its own right. While some choose silence, we choose to speak with dignity and courage. Those who respect the rules should not be the ones living in fear. Together, we can make a difference.”
We invite the community to celebrate Suzanne’s success and continue supporting efforts to protect the rights of tattoo artists.
